About Us
From our beginnings in 1897 to today, Congregation Beth Mordecai has served a diverse Jewish population drawing from Perth Amboy, suburban Middlesex County, and as far away as New York City.
Beth Mordecai is in a historic synagogue that opened in 1927. Its finest art deco features have been preserved, from exquisite stained glass windows to original woods. However, the congregation is neither stodgy nor aloof. A sense of warmth pervades the sanctuary and everyone feels accepted, including interfaith families.
Illuminating Jewish traditions is an important focus of the congregation. The Rabbi brings an education component to the Bimah, explaining weekly why the prayers are inspiring and how they relate to modern lives. Services are definitely not a spectator sport. Participants engage in lively discussions and fill the sanctuary with laughter and thought-provoking commentary.
