Our Condolences — Einhorn Family (Rabbi Saks’ in-laws)

An important message from our rabbi: Dear Hevreh, Sadness is a part of a life filled with love and of meaning. When we lose people who made a great impact on our lives, people with whom we connected on a deep, spiritual level, we mourn terribly when they die and when we have to come to the realization that they will no longer be physically present in our lives. It is on that note that I am deeply saddened to report that Mark Einhorn, brother and brother-in-law to Jules and Carol Einhorn (and Rachel's uncle), died yesterday in Philadelphia. He was a wonderful uncle, a funny and caring man whose presence will be sorely missed by so many in our family. It is at moments like these when we turn to[...]

Mission Statement for Beth Mordecai’s Caring Committee

Caring Committee Mission Statement The purpose of Beth Mordecai’s Caring Committee is to reach out to members of the Beth Mordecai community and the extended Jewish community in times of need. We believe that this is what it means to be part of a caring Jewish congregation and community. We want to offer friendship, comfort and companionship especially at times when it is most needed. We want people to know we are a family in our Jewish Home for the Soul. Ways in which we can help: We will do our best to provide rides to the synagogue when needed. We will help to organize a minyan when a family is sitting shiva. We will pick up a few items at the grocery store, or[...]

Sherry Weber — Chair of Caring Committee

I would like to introduce myself to the congregants of Beth Mordecai. I was very surprised when I got an email from Rabbi Saks requesting that as a leader of Beth Mordecai to please write a letter for the website talking about my connection to Beth Mordecai because I never thought of myself as a leader, but rather an active member. Click here to link to Caring Committee Mission Statement I joined the Temple about 5 years ago with my good friend Rhoda Friedman. Though Rhoda had been a member of this congregation when she was growing up, it was our mutual friend Joan who suggested we might like this Temple because it was[...]

DAY 411: This is what community is all about…

Dear Hevreh, This is what community is all about... After a wildly successful Shabbat by the Sea this past Friday night, we still managed to make a minyan the next day on Saturday, something that would have been very unlikely not so long ago. This is what community is all about... Last night 16 people got together at the schul for a weekday evening service so a member could say Kaddish on the day of her father's actual yahrtzeit. Through phone calls made by Sherry Weber and the Caring Committee, and through our other outreach efforts especially through Facebook, we showed how our community can come together at a moment's notice. This is what community is all about... Earlier in the day a handful of volunteers[...]

DAY 402: Building Connections That Matter

Connection is why we're here. It gives purpose and meaning in our lives - Researcher storyteller Brene Brown This past Sunday, Rachel and I hosted a wonderful event in our house. Over 20 "young people" (loosely termed) who are members or are affiliated with our congregation gathered together for a fun barbecue to schmooze, meet each other, and have a good time. It was a lot of fun, and in the words of Torah I shared towards the end of the day I mentioned that it's in moments like these when we can spend good quality time together in order to make connections that matter, connections that make us feel that this is a group and this is a[...]
