This week we begin the book of Exodus and its seminal story — the exodus of the Jewish people from slavery in the land of Egypt. Yet, the primary Hebrew name for this book — Sh’mot, meaning “names” — is completely independent from the story of the Exodus. Why would the central story of our Exodus from Egypt simply be called “the Book of Names”? During our service we will explore this question to help us understand the role that the Exodus plays in the meanings we associate with our names. To truly know what’s in a name, we have to know the stories behind that name.
