DAY 536: Discovering the Treasures of Beth Mordecai

Dear Hevreh,

Last Friday night, I told a story about a Jewish man from Prague who goes to Vienna to find a treasure that he sees in his dreams. Once he gets to Vienna he is told, in a roundabout way, that the treasure he was looking for was under his house in Prague all along. Yet, if it wasn’t for the man’s trip out of his home, he would never have discovered the treasure in his home. I used this story as a launching pad to talk about the “treasure” of Beth Mordecai, the special-something inside our congregation that we sometimes have to discover by going outside our walls, like the Rubber Duck Race at the YMCA.

Yet no matter where these experiences take place, many of us have experienced a treasured moment in our community in which we feel a sense of joy as if we are opening a treasure chest full of riches. Those moments are not always easy to articulate and each one of us enjoys the spoils of Beth Mordecai’s treasure differently, whether it’s outside our walls at a Duck Racecity Hanukkah celebrationcommunal Israel event, or service project, or inside our walls at a Pep RallyWhite Out Friday Night, or Cantor showcase(among others).

Yet these programs could not have happened or been successful if they weren’t dreamed, discussed, and organized by members of our community who see the potential richness of these treasures. That’s why opportunities like tonight’s Board of Trustees meeting is so important — to come together in our common pursuit of the unique treasure of Beth Mordecai. Tonight we will be focusing primarily on the upcoming Beth Mordecai Reunion Weekend of March 14-16, which has the potential to reveal untold treasures from across Beth Mordecai’s glorious history. Yet, the importance of these conversations should happen both in and out of our formal meetings, whenever two or more of us gather together. Let’s take the example of the Jewish man from the story to discover Beth Mordecai’s treasure — our unique treasure — wherever it may appear on our journey.
