DAY 640: Honoring Cantor David Levine z”l

Dear Hevreh,

When I arrived in our community, one of my first experiences was to head to New York to meet with Cantor David Levine z”l about our high holiday services. It was clear from that initial meeting on the streets of New York that Cantor Levine had a special love for cantorialhazzanut and a penetrating passion for expressing the powerful themes of cantorialhazzanut on the high holidays.

When his untimely death occurred only a few months after he graced our bimah for the last time, I knew that his legacy would live on in the minds, hearts, and spirits of the members of our congregation he touched with his music. Yet, as a congregation we have to do more than simply hold Cantor Levine in our hearts. We have to honor his legacy by actively remembering his accomplishments in the midst of our congregation’s activities.

If that’s the case, then what better way to honor his memory than by connecting it with our creative and one of-a-kind Cantorial Showcase program? What better time to recall his cantorial skill than on Shabbat Hagadol, the “High Holy Day” of Passover?

On Saturday April 12th at 10 am we will honor a special man, a beautiful voice, and a musical legacy we will always cherish.

May the memory of Cantor David Levine z”l always be for a blessing.

Kol Tuv,

Rabbi Ari Saks
