What is the Cantorial Showcase?


יהללו את שם ה' כי נשגב שמו לבדו (תהילים קמח) Let all praise the Glory of God, for God alone is sublime (Psalms 148)  What is the idea? The Cantorial Showcase is a joint program Temple Beth Mordecai and the Cantorial school of JTS to showcase the talents of different up-and-coming cantorial students in our beautiful and acoustically perfect sanctuary. Each showcase will highlight the talents of a different student and will include a profile in the local Jewish newspaper in addition to a financial stipend. The cantorial student will partner with Rabbi Ari Saks to identify signature pieces to chant that are equally as important as the sermon and other teachings during the service. DAY 341: The Purpose of a Jewish Community

Dear Hevreh, There are certain moments when you realize the purpose of being a part of a Jewish community. It could be inspiring services like our past Cantorial Showcase or our upcoming Friday Night Shabbat By the Sea. It could be fun social oriented events with friends like Sunday's Trip to Brighton Beach or June 20th's Movie Night. It could be moments of great insight into the meaning of our tradition, like we try to do every Friday during our Online Parashah Class. Yet, despite the worthiness of all of these Jewish communal opportunities, I think the one that hits the closest to home is when we are grieving and we need our community to support us.[...]

Dear Hevreh, Who doesn't like exchanging gifts? Who doesn't like the excitement of opening up a box full of mystery and opportunity -- is it a toy? a book? a piece of jewelry? The anticipation of ripping through that wrapping paper can be thrilling, even if it's just for a moment. Yet there is also the other side of gift giving: the trepidation that we didn't get the right gift.
