Adult Education GUEST Lecture: Dr. (Rabbi) David Kraemer

Join us for a VERY special guest lecture from renowned Talmudist, Professor, Librarian of the Jewish Theological Seminary DR. DAVID KRAEMER!  Date: 7:30 pm Thursday, November 20th 2014 Where: Congregation Beth Mordecai (224 High Street, Perth Amboy 08861) Topic: Food, Identity, and Blessings [caption id="attachment_4117" align="aligncenter" width="300" class=" "] Photo taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwartz's[/caption] Many assume that when we recite blessings for food (such as “hamotzi”), we are in effect blessing the food we are about to consume. And slumberers, arise from your slumber!" (Maimonides Laws of Repentance 3:4)   Dear Hevreh, One of the things I'm often working on is how to be more judicious and efficient in using my time effectively. Schedules, planning, and even execution of the tasks at hand only seem to go so far, because as I sat in prayer yesterday I realized that one of the things I often miss when it comes to trying to[...]

Shabbat Hol Ha-Moed Passover (שבת חול המועד פסח) — Time for a Festival

Shabbat Hol Ha-Moed Passover 2014/5774: Time for a Festival In the portion for this Shabbat of Hol Ha-Moed Passover, we read the term "moed" as it refers to the holiday of Passover...or as it refers to the time of Aviv (Spring). So which is it? Does "moed" mean "festival" or "time"? We will explore this question as it will help us understand the unique qualities of Jewish festivals like Passover and how these holidays have special significance for us today. Classes from other years...Shabbat Hol Ha-Moed Passover 2013/5773 -- Keeping Shabbat in Passover

DAY 341: The Purpose of a Jewish Community

Dear Hevreh, There are certain moments when you realize the purpose of being a part of a Jewish community. It could be inspiring services like our past Cantorial Showcase or our upcoming Friday Night Shabbat By the Sea. It could be fun social oriented events with friends like Sunday's Trip to Brighton Beach or June 20th's Movie Night. It could be moments of great insight into the meaning of our tradition, like we try to do every Friday during our Online Parashah Class. Yet, despite the worthiness of all of these Jewish communal opportunities, I think the one that hits the closest to home is when we are grieving and we need our community to support us.[...]
