DAY 974: Trying On Something New — Recapping our Murder Mystery Event

מה שנהגו ללבוש פרצופים בפורים וגבר לובש שמלת אשה ואשה כלי גבר אין איסור בדבר מאחר שאין מכוונים אלא לשמחת בעלמא (שלחן עורך, סימן תרצ"ו, סעיף ח') The custom of wearing masks on Purim, or men dressing in women's clothing and women dressing in men's clothing, is not forbidden since the only intention [of these actions] is mere happiness" (Shulkhan Orekh, 696:8) Dear Hevreh, It's fun to play a "B" movie star even though I should really have been an A-lister. As my self-obsessed alter-ego Kelly Kingsley would have said during last night's FANTASTIC Murder Mystery Party, "The only thing stopping me from getting to the top is bad movie directors and poor talent evaluators." It was fun to play a character wholly[...]

DAY 759: Shabbat by the Sea — Creative Fun

This is the first of a 3 part journal series previewing different aspects of this Friday night's special Shabbat by the Sea -- Family and Community Edition. The theme for this journal is: creativity. Dear Hevreh, One of the things I've enjoyed the most over the past few years is being able to creatively work on ways to engage our community together. Whether it's a Cantorial Showcase, aUnique High Holiday Experience, or driving to people's homes to wave the lulav and count the omer, we've run many unique programs that you won't see in other places. Trying something new is exciting, but there is a certain amount of anxiety and[...]

DAY 494: The Keif (or “Fun”) of Rubber Ducks

Dear Hevreh, Last night, many of you received an email from our esteemed Executive Director Elliot Rubin about selling ducks for our Rubber Duck Race fundraiser on December 8th. (In case you did not receive the email, you can read it here). The focus of that email was on the importance of selling ducks as a mitzvah, as a command, in which we recognize our obligation to raise valuable tz'dakkah for our community and the greater Perth Amboy community. While that sense of mitzvah is extremely important, I want to focus in this journal entry on another way to look at this campaign we're undertaking over the next 33 days. This process should be keif, or FUN!, because c'mon...we're selling rubber ducks!   I don't know about you but[...]

DAY 349: Oneg Shabbat

Dear Hevreh, Rhoda would have loved this Shabbat -- being outside, singing, having dinner together. She would have loved the atmosphere, the camaraderie, and the positive feelings that Shabbat by the Sea always generates. But most of all, I just think that Rhoda would have just had fun because she was such a fun person. There's something really special about coming together like we will this Shabbat, something k'oneg, something delightful. Let's make this Shabbat as delightful as we can as we honor Rhoda Friedman z"l's memory. May it always be for a blessing. Shabbat Shalom, Rabbi Ari Saks
