DAY 1391: Reflection as a Police Chaplain – The Power of God

Dear Hevreh, I never held a pistol before, let alone carried one in a gun holster snug tightly against my hip. Yet there I was, a rabbi and a police chaplain, armed in a training simulator at the Middlesex County Police training center to get a taste of what police officers experience on a daily basis. The wall length screen in front of me projected scenarios that police face, from traffic stops of armed bikers and arrest warrant fugitives to domestic violence calls. It was sobering, surreal even, to encounter these individuals on the screen who, through the wonders of technology, seemed so real. As our Captain said, even though you know it's not real your heart rate will increase as[...]

DAY 1182: The Middle or The End?

(9/25/15), Depending on your take, we are either at the end of the holidays (no more Rosh Hashanah or Yom Kippur) or we are in the middle of them (Sukkot, Sh'mini Atzeret, & Simhat Torah, here we come!). There are good reasons for both opinions. For those who see us at the end of the holidays, nothing can beat the majesty, the aura, and solemnity of the High Holiday experience (especially after hearing our organ at work on Kol Nidre!). Though it may be a short time, it is an intense time and, especially after Norman's moving Yizkor Address, reminds us why we're Jews. Listen to parts of the Yom Kippur Service including... Organ playing Kol Nidre Cantor Bronwen Mullin's version[...]

DAY 1110: Writing Our Script for the High Holidays

(7/15/15), 62 days. That's how long it is until we gather together in our beautiful sanctuary to ring in another Jewish New Year (!). I don't know about you, but 62 days feels far off and just around the corner at the same time. Yesterday, I spent some quality time in the library at the Jewish Theological Seminary to prepare material for the holidays and to turn my mind towards the themes of repentance, forgiveness, and self-renewal. Perhaps its because it felt so blistering hot outside, but it was hard to imagine that I was preparing for an event at the end of the summer. Could the words I was reading about a holiday still over two months away resonate with[...]

Yom Kippur Day 5775 Sermon — A Moving Tradition

A Moving Tradition Yom Kippur Day 5775 – October 4, 2014* Rabbi Ari Saks Congregation Beth Mordecai   A week ago today, on a quiet Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur a small group of Jews gathered at Beth Mordecai in Perth Amboy, NJ to schmooze, to learn, and to drink some schnapps. In addition to the laughs and the cajoling needed to convince everyone around the table that it was ok to drink before noon, we had some really interesting conversations about our shul and about Judaism in general. One comment that spurred some interesting discussion was when one of our community members, let’s call him David, said “I think that Judaism or all of religion for that matter is about comfort.” As[...]
