DAY 703: Revealing God’s Torah — Celebrating Shavuot

Dear Hevreh, During this past Shabbat and Annual Meeting, I shared my philosophy of Unique Torah -- how the Unique Stories of our lives can turn into the teachings of our Unique Torah when we share it and connect it so something greater than ourselves. This philosophy is not only predicated on expanding the definition of "Torah" from the Torah read on the bimah to the Torah (i.e. teachings) we learn from our relationships and our personal experiences of life, but also to seeing this expanded definition of Torah as having the potential to be exalted, godly, and divine, as if it was also revealed by God at Mt. Sinai. As such, our celebration of Shavuot, in which we recall how[...]

Parashat B’hukkotai (בחוקתי) — Is The Earth At Fault?

Parashat B'hukkotai 2014/5774 (Triennial I) -- Is The Earth At Fault We normally think of the earth and all it contains as being some of the most beautiful creations of God. Throughout the Torah, the earth is laid to waste when humans commit sins, a trope that has become very popular today in environmentalist circles. But is it possible that according to our Torah portion today, Parashat B'hukkotai, the blame for human transgression should not be laid solely at the feet of humanity? Should the earth bear some responsibility for the transgressions that lay it bare? Check out today's class for this fascinating conversation!

Parashat Aharei Mot (אחרי מות): There Is No Earlier and There Is No Later in Torah

Triennial I (2014/5774): There Is No Earlier and There Is No Later in Torah The first words of our Torah portion begin with the words "aharei mot sh'nei b'nei aharon -- after the deaths of Aaron's sons." Yet the demise of Aaron's sons, Nadav and Avihu, happened three Torah portions earlier in Parashat Sh'mini, so why does the Torah have to teach us that our Torah portion occurs after their death! One explanation is that this proves that there is no earlier (past) or later (present) when it comes to the chronology of events as it is written in the Torah. During today's class we will explore this explanation to try to understand it's implications for the meaning of Torah -- should[...]

DAY 580: Torah Can Only Be Acquired In Community

(1/31/14)  As we enter into another Shabbat, another opportunity to spend time together and learn together in community, I want to share a simple thought from the Talmud about the meaning of community:   אין התורה נקנית אלא בחבורה (ברכות סג:) Eyn ha-Torah nikneit ela b'havurah (B'rakhot 63b) The knowledge of Torah can only be acquired in a community (Tractate B'rakhot 63b)   There is something unique about the knowledge and secrets embedded in the Torah that, according to this teaching, they can only be revealed when we learn it together. Yes, learning Torah is a fascinating intellectual exercise for the individual, but it becomes something more, something larger, when we open ourselves to hearing the interpretations of other lovers of Torah. And if Torah learning is the foundation[...]

DAY 558: The Power of Torah

Dear Hevreh, The Ramban, among others, teaches us that what we understand to be the Torah of the Five Books of Moses was actually created before the creation of the world as this supernal gift that was waiting for the right time to be given to God's creations. As Walter and I learned yesterday at Yeshivat Panera, this view of the Ramban that Torah is supernal, existing beyond time and space, is epitomized by his teaching that when the Torah was given it was written as black fire upon white fire. That is to say the (black) letters and the (white) parchment of our physical Torah contains an inner flame, or passion, that when accessed has the power to illuminate hidden teachings[...]

Parashat Bo (בא) — Pharaoh’s Egypt

Last week's Online Parashah Class: Parashat Bo 2014/5774 (Triennial I) -- Pharaoh’s Egypt: By the People, For the People? By most accounts, the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt were God-like figures who had God-like powers over their subjects. Yet, in our Parashah which describes the last moments before the Israelites are freed from Egypt, it seems that the people have a little more power than you’d expect under Pharaoh’s rule. Is this example of populous pressure a hint of the move towards more popular centered rule, like democracy?  Classes from other years...  (2013/5773) Triennial III -- Leaving in Haste: On the Israelites Being Freed From Egypt

Parashat Vayehi (ויחי) — To Lie With Our Ancestors

2013/5774 (Triennial I) -- To Lie With Our Ancestors  In this week's Torah portion, Jacob is on his death bed and says he's about to "lie with my ancestors" (shakhavti im avotai). What is the meaning of this phrase in regards to biblical attitudes towards death? Can we also learn something from this text on the role that biblical ancestors play in biblical worship and on the biblical understanding of the afterlife? Lastly, how will this learning help us understanding the meaning of death in our lives?
