Emphasizing the First Day; Reimagining the Second Day — A plan for our synagogue observance of the Jewish Holidays (High Holidays 5774)

Rabbi Ari Saks Congregation Beth Mordecai High Holidays Bulletin Article, 5774 Last Friday, for the second day of Rosh Hashanah, we had a special and unique High Holiday experience that was not the normal, traditional service. The order of the service was different, there was no Torah service, and we had opportunities for discussion and some dancing, in addition to some other innovative methods used to enhance our Rosh Hashanah experience. Overall, the feedback has been that it was a fun and meaningful service. Yet the service would never have been possible if it were not for a combination of a unique quirk of the Jewish calendar and the unique customs in which we observe our holidays. Parashat Va-ethanan (ואתחנן) — Are Certain Parts of the Torah More Important Than Others?

2013/5773 (Triennial III) -- Are Certain Parts of the Torah More Important Than Others? This week we read Parashat Va-ethanan which includes two of the most famous sections of the Torah -- the Shema and the 10 Commandments. It is customary for the congregation to stand during the public reading of the 10 Commandments, yet this custom has been debated throughout rabbinic literature because standing for the 10 commandments seems to overemphasize their importance. Parashat Bamidbar (במדבר) — Making Every Dot Count

2013/5773 (Triennial III) -- Making Every Dot Count There are 10 times when small dots (or diamonds) appear above words in the Torah. There must be a purpose for them, otherwise why would they be written in the text! Could they teach us something about how the Torah was written down? Could they teach us abouthow to read the text in front of us? Join us for a fascinating discussion on how, in the Torah, we make every dot count!

Parashat T’tzaveh (תצוה) — Connecting With God in Different Ways

2013/5773 (Triennial III) -- Connecting with God in Different Ways  Many Jewish communities, including most synagogues, focus on bringing people closer to their Judaism in various different ways, including through learning (Torah) and prayer (Avodah). Yet in the hectic times we live in, are we stretching ourselves too thin as institutions and as individuals? Should we focus on specific areas of interest or continue a more generalized approach? Perhaps this week's Parashah can give us some insight into this question.  Classes from other years... 2014/5774 (Triennial I) -- The Torah's View of Brotherly Love
