Parashat Vayera 2015/5776 (Triennial III) — Where Is Home?

Beginning with Abraham, the Israelites are in constant search for home. Their existence is predicated upon the constant search for home and the reality of living in the diaspora or exile. Is it possible for the Israelites to truly ever reach home? Is it possible for us to ever find our true home? Or is life a constant search for it, with lots of stops along the way. We'll look at this question through Abraham's search for home and in particular his sojourn in the land of the Philistines for "many days" (Genesis 21:34). Join us for this fascinating class on finding home. CLICK HERE TO VIEW THE SOURCE SHEET! Classes from other years: 2012/5773 -- Shirking Responsibility for Hurricane Sandy 2014/5775[...]

This trope of raping foreigners is echoed later in the Bible in Judges 19:22. Why are the men in both of these stories doing this to the foreigners in their midst? What can these stories teach us about the power of rape and attitudes to foreigners? Do these stories have anything to teach us today? Classes from other years: Parshat Vayera[...]

Parashat Vayera (וירא) — Shirking Responsibility for Hurricane Sandy?

Parashat Vayera 2012/5773 (Triennial III) -- Shirking Responsibility for Hurricane Sandy? (Genesis 21:1-22:24) During this edition of Rabbi Saks' Online Parashah class, we discuss the similarities and differences between Hurricane Sandy and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Particularly interesting is how the story of Sodom and Gomorrah seems to indicate that humanity has a predilection for shirking our responsibilities for disasters and catastrophes that seem to be beyond our control.
