YJPA is collecting toiletries to be packaged as matanot la-evyonim (gifts to the poor) during our Boozy Brunch on Sunday, April 3rd. You can drop them off at the synagogue anytime beforehand.
We're specifically looking for:
Deodorant
Soap (shower at the Y)
Toothpaste
shampoo
toothbrushes
floss
shaving kits (for men)
shaving kits (for women)
feminine hygiene

In one of my recent journal entries, I described how some of the latest political issues, most notably the Iranian deal, are poised to pull the Jewish community apart. Likewise, worsening affiliation rates, merging institutions, and less activism make us wonder at times what the future of the American Jewish community will look like.

Today is the birthday of the world
(Rosh Hashanah liturgy)
Dear Hevreh,
According to tradition, Rosh Hashanah is considered to be the "birthday of the world," when God first began the process of creation. Perhaps this tradition teaches us that like our birthdays, the "re-birth" of the year not only gives us a chance to reflect on the year that has gone by, but to be rejuvenated for the year to come with the youthful energy of a newborn who looks at the world and sees the possibilities of what lies before her. In other words, Rosh Hashanah can help us find the kid in ourselves again.

This past Sunday, Rachel and I hosted a wonderful event in our house.
