TOT SHABBAT -- Celebrate Shabbat!
A FREE program run by an accredited teacher designed for children ages 2-5 years old, with siblings and children of all ages welcome.
Celebrate Shabbat through this fun and interactive service with songs, story time, an activity or craft (Shabbat friendly of course!), and a kiddie kiddush.
This week at Tot Shabbat we will be learning about and celebrating Shabbat itself! We'll read a wonderful children's story about all of the fun and exciting traditions of Shabbat, sing upbeat Shabbat themed songs, create our own Shabbat pretend candles, challah, and spice box, and then enjoy a delicious challah and grape juice mini kiddush.
Kiddush with the congregation to follow!

הָיוֹם הָרָת עוֹלָם
Hayom Harat Olam
Today is the birthday of the world
(Rosh Hashanah liturgy)
Dear Hevreh,
According to tradition, Rosh Hashanah is considered to be the "birthday of the world," when God first began the process of creation. Perhaps this tradition teaches us that like our birthdays, the "re-birth" of the year not only gives us a chance to reflect on the year that has gone by, but to be rejuvenated for the year to come with the youthful energy of a newborn who looks at the world and sees the possibilities of what lies before her. In other words, Rosh Hashanah can help us find the kid in ourselves again.
How appropriate then that in this week leading up to Rosh Hashanah we[...]

Dear Hevreh,
Sometimes we tend to overthink, whether it's in our decision making or in our planning. We can get so caught up in the possibilities of what we can do and, at least in the case of our synagogue programming, trying to be innovative. Sometimes we spend too much time thinking about how to dress up the cover of the "book" we want to teach to make it shinier and more beautiful so more people pay attention. Yet, as is often the case, the most successful way to teach -- or to program or to plan -- is to keep it simple. As is often the case, the most successful way to teach is simply to open the book.
This past[...]

In this week's Torah portion, God sends snakes to help the Israelites face their fears as they travel through the dessert. Thanks to our friends G-dcast for this interesting, animated description of the week's parashah. QUESTION TO CONSIDER: What are the fears that each of us face? Why do we have those fears and how can we confront them together? Share your thoughts in the comments. // Post by Congregation Beth Mordecai.

Dear Hevreh,
Well, it's official. Beth Mordecai has successfully invaded Barnes and Noble! In partnership with PJ Library of Middlesex Federation and Barnes and Noble of Menlo Park, we had a wonderful event with crafts, songs, and Hanukkah stories. There were 7-8 families who had their kids take part in the event (for a total of around 10 kids), many of whom are currently unaffiliated. One family is already planning on coming to the Hanukkah party and another expressed great interest in our Hebrew School program called Project Jewish Living. We will be following up with the families in the next couple of days, but most importantly we provided them with a positive Jewish experience that[...]
